Don't get me wrong, the book is amazing. Perfect 10/10 will be reading this again. But when the book arrived it was beat to ****. The back cover had obviously been bent and beat up then sealed in a package and mailed off. The front looks good enough though
The classic Orwell novel in a beautiful hardcover edition with a handsome cover design and gold gilded pages. It also has a ribbon page marker. The book is rather small but not too small. I’m very pleased with the Chiltern Classic edition and I plan on buying more of this line.
This book is hands down one of my favorite books of all time and is truly the definition of a classic. The story can easily be applied to the world we live in today.Now as for this hardcover its just okay.. I noticed that there was a slight curvature to the front cover (picture attached), however it doesn't seem anything of concern for most part and is probably due to amazons warehouse workers being careless as usual with their handling of customers items (amazon please fix this ever growing issue) and not the result of the publisher.The dust cover is simple and gets the job done, I feel that a little more effort could have been put in for a classic such as this.. especially since its a 75th anniversary..The paper used is nice and the words are printed clearly unlike the paperback.. which I will get to in a moment. The spacing between words makes it easy to read and is the perfect font size in my opinion.The paperback is seriously lacking in quality from pages having very faded text, poor paper choice, and very very bad binding. The pages started to separate from the binding after getting halfway through the book and was quite frustrating to see as I was incredibly careful with the book. So do yourself a favor and pay the extra for the hardcover.. you'll thank me later.Overall its a decent hardcover for the price but as always expect minor blemishes due to mishandling and disrespectful warehouse workers.

I read 1984 a few weeks ago after having ordered it from Amazon.com. My reasons for this were because the book had been mentioned quite frequently on some of the websites that I freqent online, and with all that is going on these days with the government, and everyone's fears (including my own) of our diminishing freedoms here in the United States, I found my site interested in reading this book. I haven't actually read anything else by George Orwell and not sure if I will or not, but I did enjoy reading 1984 and found it to be of great interest.Some of the parts throughout the book were scary. Some were sad. A few were humorous, such as when they were talking about the newspeak for the first time and how they wanted to get rid of a lot of words, which would no doubt make the language quite confusing. Much of the book was creepy, though, and I found myself comparing certain things in this book to stuff that was happening currently in the United States. While an exact replica of Oceania probably isn't likely to occur, it is very possibly, and unfortunately very likely as well, that the US may at some point in the near or distant future become something very close to what Oceania was in 1984, and that's what is so scary about it. I am not saying that it is a premonition set in stone, of course, but 1984 does serve as a warning that, yes, something like this could indeed happen and will happen if we allow it to; if only more people would listen to it...The character of Winston Smith was very well portrayed. He is a confused character throughout the beginning of the book, not sure where he stands, not sure if he is insane or not, though as it goes on, he becomes more sure in his stance against Big Brother, and his struggle to remain human in an inhumane society devoid of all emotion, save for a fierce loyalty and devotion to Big Brother.There isn't a lot of action and suspense in this book, so if you're looking for that, you might do well to look elsewhere.On the other hand, there are a lot of interesting philosophies and politics discussed throughout the book, and its definitely something that will make you think long after you are done reading. Along with being thought-provoking, it lends a credible, yet very terrifying vision of the future.

Great book. I read it in highschool but decided to reread it and still just as good. Whether you’ve read it before or it’s your first time, I absolutely recommend!
It’s a classic for a reason. I enjoyed the book and wish I’d read it sooner like many of my peers.

This isn't about the contents of this book. Plenty of other places you can get that info. This review is about this version/printing. Good student version. Uncoated paper for pages, decent font size, lightweight binding. It'll last the semester. You won't wince at the price if you need to recycle at the end of school year.
Worth reading again
I've noticed that more recent copies (perhaps not all of them) of Oxford World's Classics books (actually, unrelatedly (as far as I know), those of Spinger books as well) seems to have "blurry/smudged-looking/not-very-sharp" letters, and reading them puts a strain on my eyes; that is why I bought my copy of this book from aused book seller, and fortunately, I've received a "good" copy (with sharp (or, really, normal) letters). I'm not sure which rating would be fairer. I think I'm going to go with 4/5 just so that potential buyers are aware of the varying printing quality.

Depressing, but also inspires one to keep fighting oppression so we don't end up like the main character.
Holds up to the test of time
This book can appear boring at first. However once you keep reading you discover some invaluable truths about what is going on today and it really makes you question what you have been taught. Winners write history. That has been proven already. Great book.
