A document that shaped a nation.

An authoritative analysis of the Constitution of the United States and an enduring classic of political philosophy, The Federalist Papers were written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay to explain the complexities of a constitutional government, its political structure and its principles rooted in the inherent rights of man. Scholars have long regarded this work as a milestone in political science and a classic of American political theory.

Based on the original McLean edition of 1788 and edited by noted historian Clinton Rossiter, this special edition includes textual notes and a select bibliography by Charles R. Kesler, a table of contents with a brief précis of each essay, an appendix containing the Constitution cross-referenced to The Federalist Papers, an index of ideas listing the major political concepts discussed, and copies of the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation.

This book is featured on The Book Club with Michael Knowles, PragerU's show dedicated to the great books of Western civilization. In this episode, Michael Knowles is joined by Ben Shapiro to discuss the Founders' vision for a limited government built to protect the God-given rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Standard size book. Good quality paper and cover exactly as described

Exactly as described and a perfect addition to any homeschool history program. I purchased this for my daughter who was in second grade but we are very strong into American history and rights. This book was perfect for what we're doing this semester. Paper is a good thickness and quality. The cover was paperback as described, but it's a good thickness as well. The verbiage is accurate but also easy to understand

85 essays

I was concerned when buying this copy since so many reviews said it did not contain all 85 essays. Happily, this version of the federalist papers contains all 86 essays, and additional primary sources (as listed, the Articles, Constitution, Declaration, etc.) and secondary sources (introduction and notes). The second picture shows how much of the book is dedicated just to the text of the essays. (Before the essays is the introduction and after are the other sources). The book is rather small in frame, as is the text.

A great resource with all 85 papers!

Most books with the Federalist Papers that I could find only had a selection of them included. This book contains all 85 and also lists who wrote them and when they were published (if that information is available). It also has a fairly decent Table of Contents so you can easily find the paper you're looking for. The constitution is also included at the beginning which some people might find handy. Overall exactly what I was looking for. Would buy again.

Understanding The Founders Reasoning

Before the ratification of the Constitution of 1787, three of its Framers, Hamilton, Madison, and Jay, published a series of articles called The Federalist in a New York paper under the pen name of "Publius." These articles are now published as The Federalist Papers. Publius' intent was to defend the proposed Constitution by explaining its overall integrity and the republican government it would establish. Ironically, one of Publius' intents was to defend the Constitution against the argument it was too weak to withstand those who would subvert republicanism in favor of some form of aristocratic domination.Sadly, not many read this work, despite the fact that it is one of the few documents that define what the founders' intent really was. This omission has not stopped many from espousing their (lack of) knowledge of that intent. The casual reader can be put off by the size of the work, 85 articles, and the seriousness of the articles. This work was intended for serous people. However, one can approach it with a pen and yellow highlighter and LEARN its wisdom or the more casual reader can let the Introduction guide them to the pieces that interest them. These casual readers will learn The Federalist Papers are divided into two divisions, each with different themes. The first division addresses the issue of a "firm" and "well-constructed" Union as opposed to a lose confederation of states. This division then addresses how the constitution is protected from the founders' anticipated accidental and intentional threats and answers: what the respective purposes of the Union and the Constitution are; what should be done with society's will; the problem of politics; and even the issues of taxes and maintaining an army. All of these together described the function of government as defined by the Constitution. In the second division, The Federalist Papers move from the basic function of government to the structure of the American government and using that structure to secure society's common good, the people's happiness, and the public good. All this is accomplished using a moderate tone that makes the reader part of the discourse and not the object of a lecture. This is a constitution aimed at the public in many ways.So at heart, The Federalist Papers is a guide to the Constitution intended for the casual reader, a reader who can pick and chose those elements that are meaningful.

The most informative work on the American dream ever written

The American Republic. What an unequalled and brilliant diamond in a world covered in coal. It is so sad after reading this book (The Federalist Papers) that I finally find the reality I have been seeking. The pieces have fallen into place after a lifetime of reading other works and wondering why I and others were so frustrated at the course America was taking. The fourty year rain of the Liberal left in Congress seemed a departure from the American Dream but it would not solidify in a true understanding of the problem. That is no longer the case. I now see that many of our leaders are shredding this magnificent creation into fodder for their own ambitions, corruption, political, personal and deviant pleasures. We have betrayed Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton, Madison and Jay by letting party loyalty blind us to the truth. Unfortuantely the battle has become one of good and evil, right and wrong and bipartisanship is nothing more than a covert effort to gain compromise in only one direction, to the extreme, fanatical left. The left has so corrupted the original intent of our Constitution that it is by their pathetic interpretation nearly unrecognizable today. After reading numerous books, I.E. the Bible, the Book of Virtues, Slouching Towards Gomorrah, Out of Order, We Hold These Truths and numerous others. In addition to being a life long student of the Magna Carta, Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation and the Constitution itself. I found it unavoidable in todays atmosphere to go any further with the vast number of books addressing the current crises facing our country and this president without first reading the Federalist Papers. A task I had to date, failed to do. But I knew that if High Crimes and Misdemeanors or the Death or Outrage were to mean anything to me, I needed this valuable knowledge of our founders intent. I now see that it is the only real definitive authority on what was intended by the Founders. This book is a must for any American from either side of the isle who really and truely looks for the truth and who desires to honestly make an informed and patriotic decision about the terrible disgrace brought upon our nation by the crew on the bridge of this ship of state called America. We need a new crew and we need one immediately. America is adrift on a sea of deviance, corruption, lies and betayal. "We the People" have been gut shot by an administration that cares for nothing but power. The Federalist Papers to the true student of our history will allow no other conclusion and if one hopes to think him or herself worthy of standing in the shadow of those great minds of our nations birth they must accept the truth. How little and insignificant we have made ourselves in their wake.

Every American should know about the Federalist Papers and Anti-Federalist Papers

If you really want to understand how our government was INTENDED to do then read this book. Every branch of government is out of control these days. We must return back to the Constitution the way it was intended to be.

Every American should read this

A lot of people claim to know history or know their constitutional rights. I doubt most of them. Even if one does know what the constitution says, I think it's important to know why it says it. Where do these policies come from. What was happening in the world at the time. Whose successes and failures were used to frame it. It's interesting to know our constitution was framed by ancient texts, theories, and practices.

Wordy

Took me twice as long to read this book because I had to look up so many words and re-read paragraphs to fully understand the authors. Still,I feel I came away with a greater understanding of the U.S. constitution.

This book is a must have as we seem to be questioning our country instead of defending our historywe may need to re educate ourselves on what it means to be american

Invaluable, but we’re too dumbed down to read it

Interesting how “bling” is now a word in the English dictionary, and yet most of us wouldn’t understand what is written in these pages. Couldn’t be intentional, could it? Why would a speaker of a language not make it of utmost importance for their children to not only learn their language, but how to preserve their country? Couldn’t be a foreign hidden force too cowardly to come out and fight in the open, working in the shadows to destroy us.. that would sound paranoid. Must just be the way things work. 🤪

A look at how they viewed the Constitution

A tremendous look at how some of the leading men at the time saw, not only the Constitution but also how they saw the nation progressing. They didn't see some of the problems we have today, but their biggest oversight was being opposed to the Bill of Rights. I'm glad I read this as an ebook. There were so many words that are not in common use today I would have spent half my time running to the dictionary.
